A strong team performance at Fife Steel

Fife Steel 35–73 North East Fife Basketball

On Thursday 8 October, we visited Fife Steel for an Under-14 friendly with a small but strong squad of eight.

The team started strongly, applying pressure throughout the first quarter to build a solid lead. Theo Paul's driving and aggression created positive momentum, while Joe and Elliott kept the pressure on with relentless on-ball defence.

Alex provided a strong inside presence. Despite a few first-quarter mix-ups, he had a strong second quarter as the team's offence really began to flow. Oliver played an important role as the connector, linking the group and helping keep the ball moving.

Strong contributions from Maxwell and Brodie off the bench, alongside debutant Arthur, rounded off an impressive first half. NEF came out strongly again after the break before settling into the second half. With a comfortable lead established, we focused on adding new layers to our offence.

Joe was our outstanding all-round player, with Elliott and Theo leading the way offensively. Seven players scoring multiple baskets was another big positive and reflected the contributions across the squad.

Our first community committee meeting

We recently held our first NEF Basketball community committee meeting, bringing parents and coaches together to discuss how we can strengthen the club as it continues to grow.

The conversation focused on safeguarding, communication with families, volunteer support, Basketball Scotland affiliation and future fundraising opportunities.

We also discussed exploring a welfare fund to help ensure cost does not prevent young people from accessing basketball.

The response was extremely positive. We are now following up potential committee roles and preparing a club constitution, and will share more information once the next steps have been confirmed.

Our first league match

After an incredible 12 months of growth, North East Fife Basketball's Under-14s are preparing to make club history in NEF's first-ever competitive league fixture.

We will welcome our local friends and rivals, Tayside Musketeers 1, to Madras Community Campus on Saturday 19 September 2026 for the opening game of the new Basketball Tayside & Fife League. Tip-off is at 11:50am.

“We're ahead of schedule” is a phrase NEF Basketball director Shayne Penn has found himself repeating to excited parents and players. The opportunity to join a new local league was simply too good to pass up.

The players have trained with real purpose and look ready for their first taste of league basketball. A series of closely contested friendlies, along with some excellent victories, has given the group valuable experience and growing belief that they can compete well locally.

More importantly, the league creates another pathway for players who want to pursue the game beyond NEF. Some are already exploring National League opportunities through partner clubs, building on the experience, confidence and platform they have developed with us.

A huge step forward for basketball in North East Fife

This year is shaping up to be an amazing step forward for basketball across North East Fife. In our opening week alone, more than 70 players aged 6–18 are expected to attend NEF sessions.

Our Under 14s are also set to become the first NEF team entered into an official league through Basketball Tayside & Fife. The new regional youth league is a hugely positive development, creating more opportunities for keen players to compete locally outside national competition.

After expanding into Tayport last block, NEF now has three bases across Cupar, Tayport and St Andrews, giving families across a large part of the region access to regular basketball. We also know that Med Kapasi, brother of NEF coach Kammi, is running successful sessions in Anstruther. Together, it feels like basketball has been given a real injection across the area.

The youth league is an exciting first step. We're looking forward to building on it and creating even more opportunities for local players in the years ahead.

August 2026 · Cupar sessions

First week back kicks off with a bang

Our first week back got off to a brilliant start in Cupar. The First Hoopers set the tone with some fantastic one-on-one work before taking their skills into small-sided games, with plenty of confident finishing on show.

There was also a more literal bang next door when an older player was injured, causing a little unexpected chaos ahead of the next session. Despite the frantic start, 16 players took part in our combined Under 10 and Under 12 group, including several boys moving up.

The energy and effort stayed high throughout. Most importantly, the players showed they definitely hadn't forgotten everything over the summer!
