A growing collection of workouts and coaching ideas selected by NEF Basketball. We'll add our own player challenges and session videos over time; for now, these are excellent resources from coaches we trust.

Each resource includes a short NEF note so players, families and coaches know what to look for. Start small, practise safely and focus on quality rather than trying to copy everything at once.

How to score around the rim
Steve Nash & Phil Handy
An NBA-level look at footwork, angles and different ways to finish close to the basket. Developing players can choose one or two ideas, simplify them and practise on both sides of the rim.
NEF challengeChoose one finish. Try it from both sides, then add a passive defender or partner so you have to read the space.
A small-sided game that develops the floater against a live opponent. Players have to control their final dribble, read the defender and decide when a soft finish over them is the right solution.
NEF challengeUse the floater because the defender's position calls for it, not simply because it is the focus. If another finish is available, recognise that too.
A competitive game that combines dribbling, beating a defender and finishing at the rim. The live defender gives every repetition a realistic problem to solve.
NEF challengeStart from different places around the arc. Notice how the defender and available space change your dribble, angle and finishing hand.
A dynamic team shooting activity that replaces static repetitions with movement, communication and defensive reads. Players still get plenty of shots, but they have to create and recognise them in a changing environment.
NEF challengeWatch what happens before each shot. Identify how the pass, player movement and defender's position combine to create the shooting opportunity.
A progressive shooting game built around ball movement and reading a live defender. Players must recognise when to shoot and when moving the ball will create the better opportunity.
NEF challengeLook for the defender's movement before making your decision. Can you explain the cue that tells the attacker to shoot, pass or reposition?
A practical look at the constraints-led approach that influences our own sessions: realistic problems, plenty of decisions and learning through games rather than long, isolated drills.
NEF challengeLook for how changing the space, rules or scoring encourages players to discover different solutions for themselves.
These videos are hosted by and remain the property of their original creators. NEF Basketball has selected and linked to them because we believe they can support learning; inclusion does not imply a formal partnership or endorsement.
