Individual first
We adapt the challenge to the age, confidence, experience and needs of the players in front of us, rather than following a generic session plan.
Our coaching philosophy
Our sessions may look like lots of games, challenges and play. That is intentional. Behind the energy is a targeted approach designed to help players solve problems, make decisions and develop skills they can use in a real game.

Why we coach this way
We blend games-based learning with a constraints-led approach. Instead of asking players to copy a movement in isolation, we create activities that keep the important parts of basketball present: teammates, opponents, space, timing, perception and choice.
This means players are not only learning how to perform a skill. They are learning when, where and why to use it.
We are not trying to make young players look perfect in a drill. We want them to become adaptable, confident players who can read what is happening and find solutions for themselves.
What guides us
We adapt the challenge to the age, confidence, experience and needs of the players in front of us, rather than following a generic session plan.
Players get more touches, more decisions and more opportunities to try, adjust and try again in activities that feel like basketball.
We change space, numbers, scoring or rules to invite a particular behaviour while still allowing players to discover their own solutions.
Players are encouraged to think, ask questions and speak their minds. Coaches guide learning without taking every decision away from them.
Progress is more than technique. We want every player to feel known, supported and brave enough to make mistakes on court.
Basketball is unpredictable. Our activities help players notice information and adapt instead of repeating one answer regardless of the situation.
What it looks like
You will not see ten players standing in a line waiting for one turn. We aim to keep everyone active and involved.
Players get warm while practising movement, awareness, changes of direction and reacting to others without boring repetition.
Modified 1v1, 2v1 and small-sided games create realistic problems and give players a reason to attack, pass, help or recover.
Changing how points are earned can encourage cutting, finishing, spacing or a high-value shot while keeping the activity game-like.
A player may work on a strength or personal target inside a game, allowing the coach to personalise learning without removing the player from the group.

Always learning too
Our approach continues to evolve through reflection, experience and evidence-informed coach learning. Shayne is a member of Transforming Basketball, whose resources explore modern, player-centred approaches to teaching and coaching the game.

As NEF grows, we plan to create a dedicated Player Development area for individual plans, personal targets, coach feedback and reflections. It will also give us somewhere to share session recordings, short video examples and the thinking behind our activities, helping players understand their own game and take greater ownership of their progress.

The best way to understand our approach is to get on court and play.
